Travel information

Prepare carefully before crossing the border.

Door of Faith is located in La Misión, Baja California, between Tijuana and Ensenada. Group leaders should confirm documents, insurance, transportation, and current directions before departure.

Baja California coastline near La MisiónThe coastal drive toward La Misión is beautiful, but border travel requires current documents, insurance, and directions.
Before you leave

Four details every group must settle.

01

Schedule your visit

All visits should be arranged in advance. Day visitors are normally welcomed between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.; overnight groups should confirm arrival and departure plans with their host.

02

Confirm travel documents

Every traveler must carry the documents required for entering Mexico and returning to the United States. Requirements can differ for adults, minors, air travel, and land travel.

03

Obtain Mexican vehicle insurance

U.S. automobile policies generally do not provide the liability coverage required in Mexico. Arrange a valid Mexican policy before crossing.

04

Use current directions

Roads and border-return routes change. Use the directions sent by your Door of Faith host rather than an old printed guide or a previous group's notes.

Documents

Verify requirements for every traveler.

For U.S. citizens entering Mexico by land, the U.S. State Department currently identifies a valid passport book or passport card and a Forma Migratoria Múltiple as required documents. Returning travelers must also carry a document accepted under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.

Group leaders traveling with minors should review the current requirements for parental permission and youth-group travel instead of assuming the rules are the same as an adult trip.

Check the official guidance

Travel rules can change. Review official information shortly before departure and make sure the name on each reservation matches the traveler's documents.

Driving in Mexico

Protect your group and your vehicles.

Purchase Mexican automobile insurance before entering Mexico. Door of Faith's current website recommends Baja Bound, which allows travelers to compare policies and arrange coverage online.

Group transportation

Need a passenger van?

The current site recommends ASAP Rent-A-Van for Southern California group rentals. Confirm border permission, insurance, mileage, and driver requirements directly with the rental company.

Southbound arrival

Follow the toll road toward Ensenada.

The current Door of Faith directions route groups from the San Ysidro crossing toward Playas de Tijuana and the scenic toll road, Mexico Highway 1D, continuing south toward La Misión.

01

Cross at San Ysidro.

After entering Mexico, follow signs toward Playas de Tijuana and Ensenada rather than central Tijuana.

02

Join Mexico Highway 1D.

Continue south on the toll road. Carry pesos or a payment method accepted at the current toll plazas.

03

Continue toward La Misión.

Your host will send the final exit, local turns, arrival contact, and any route notes shortly before your trip.

Northbound return

Do not rely on the old website directions.

Nate specifically identified the northbound border route as a source of confusion because the route has changed. The website should not publish a turn-by-turn route until the current instructions have been reviewed in the field.

Current practice: Your Door of Faith host will provide the latest northbound directions before departure. Leave adequate time for border traffic, fuel, rental returns, and flight check-in.
